Back to School - it's not just for kids

by Deb Presley

Just as the beginning of the calendar year can bring about New Year’s resolutions, back to school can be a great time to consider resolutions to learn something new or pursue a favorite interest you may have previously put on the “back burner”. Putting our energy into our families is worth every ounce of effort, but taking time to tap into our mental energy to grow individually is also important. How many times while talking with other moms, do you come up with a great idea, only to dismiss it with all the negatives of why it will not work. Fear and doubt invade our thoughts, and many times we put off taking an art class, enrolling at a community college, joining an interesting club, or pursuing a business opportunity.

A few years ago, a friend of mine became very passionate about her idea of an ergonomically made commode. Now, just looking up the definition of ergonomic - intended to maximize productivity by minimizing operator fatigue and discomfort - brings a bit of a snicker. But with positive support from those around her, determination, and the ability to dismiss negative and limiting thoughts, she has been able to develop a prototype, has filed for a patent, and has not let this idea simply go down the drain. Another friend went back to school and is now enthusiastically entering her first year as a teacher. There are an abundance of opportunities all over the area to pursue your individual interest, whatever it may be, to become the most fabulous you.

Some tips for making your dreams become reality.

• Surround yourself with like-minded people and avoid people who only bring only negativity.

* Join groups and clubs that support your interests. Simply joining a Book Club can be very rewarding.

* Continue your education through community universities.

* Participate in events and classes at local hospitals. Check out online calendar lists for various classes from diet and exercise to volunteer opportunities.

* Volunteer with the PTO (chair a committee or volunteer within a committee of interest). Sharing talents benefits the school greatly and is a fantastic way to share in your child's school years.

*Checking into your local park and recreation department for various classes offered.

• Look into your local Chamber of Commerce for business workshops.

*Surf the numerable online sources like mommasterminds.com, internetbasedmoms.com, and sba.gov for small business resources.

As the school year begins anew, take time to expand your mind. Start with an idea, interest, or hobby and bring about the most fabulous new you. Your family will see the most fabulous mom and wife, too.
